Between Friday (26) and Saturday 27 June 2020, the EMPD Public Order Policing with Anti-Drunken Driving Units Members, apprehended eight (8) male and female suspects where the stolen bakkie, was also recovered.
Eight (8) protesters between the ages of 25 and 56, were handcuffed by EMPD Officers under Specialized Services, for public violence, contravening the National Road Traffic Act and convening of prohibited gathering under lockdown level 3, yesterday (26 June) between 08:00 and 14h00, on Leondale, Luthando and Old Heidelberg (R103) roads.
At 4am, a large group claiming to be Phumula Park residents gathered at exits and entrances of the area, including Luthando and Leondale roads, barricading intersections and main thoroughfares with rubble, stones and burning tyres. Metro Police Officers specializing in crowd management and crime prevention responded. The unruly crowd attacked Officers with rocks and foreign objects, attempted to ambush them before EMPD retaliated and effected arrests. Some lawbreakers managed to escape and the contained 8, were taken to Alberton police station.
Today (27 June) at 11:00 in Boksburg area, patrolling EMPD Drunken Driving Members were stopped by the troubled male pedestrian, claiming that his white GWM Steed (D/cab) Light Delivery Vehicle, has just been stolen on a shopping complex parking bay, on Northrand road while he was busy on a shopping spree. Armed with a vehicle tracking APP on his smart phone, in less than fifteen minutes (15 min), the bakkie owner and Officers spotted the van abandoned (with the ignition tempered with) on Jan Smuts road, on the sidewalk. The SAPS Members with fingerprints Unit, were summoned to the scene, to gather more evidence, so that perpetrators could face the full might of the law.
The arrested eight (8), are expected to appear at the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court soon and Police, will continue to monitor the volatile area.
