Finding passion in the art Performance

By: Lerato Moteane

Her first love is performing on stage. Basetsana Makgoba has been in the entertainment industry for over seven years, she actively participates in theatre as she describes it to be her comfort home. The Spruitview-born artist is multitalented, her talents do not only amount to performance, but she is also a singer, a writer and a director.

Basetsana offers individual or group classes to youngsters who aspire to be like herself. She says, “I have absolute passion in what I do, so I thought to myself why not share this God-given talent with people who would like to be in this industry? Also what my students need to understand is, performing arts requires a lot of practice in order to excel in this craft; and if you don’t have the passion for it, it is very likely that you will not survive.” She would like to venture into acting for television, as she is only used to the live performance. “I’m only used to performing for a live audience, so I would like to experience acting for TV,” said Basetsana. Being a bubbly and lively person like herself, she would consider getting into radio also, as she believes she has the personality for it. “I try not to limit myself when it comes to my capabilities, and when I go for something, I make sure to give it my all,” she said. When she decided to pursue her love for the performing arts, her parents did not understand her choices. She says “it’s not a secret that parents want the best for their children, but they do not consider what the child actually loves when it comes to career choices. For my parents, what they thought about what I’m doing was it is just a hobby and not necessarily a career, but as time went by they got to understand it, accept it and even got to a point where they started coming to my performance shows to see me, I’ve never been more happier in my life like that.” Basetsana says, she would like to see the arts industry growing rapidly and people showing their immense support towards it. “The digital space has now taken over and people have lost the true essence of a live show; that experience on its own is rejuvenating and you can never get it anywhere else,”
