FIVE SPEEDSTERS INCLUDING A YOUNG DRIVER CAUGHT AT 202KM/H ARRESTED ON THE N3/RAND AIRPORT

The EMPD High Speed Unit conducted speed law enforcement on Saturday (21 Sept) in Alberton area, on the R59 (Sybrand Van Niekerk) freeway direction south between Kliprivier and R550. On Sunday (22 Sept), the N3 freeway direction south by Rand Airport turnoff was visited. The special operation took place in the mornings between 5:00 and 11:00 on both days.

On Saturday at 5:50, the 32-year old male driving a silver Mercedes Benz sedan, claiming that he was late for work, was arrested when clocked at the excessive speed of 170km/h on that 120km/h stretch of the R59 freeway. He was escorted to the Brackendowns police station and charged with reckless and negligent driving. The motorist is expected to appear in the Palmridge Magistrate's Court shortly.

Meanwhile on Sunday morning, speed law enforcement operation yielded four (4) drivers arrested for exceeding the speed limit on the N3 freeway. The arrested drivers clocked speeds of between 163 and 202km/h. A 21-year old male driver in an Opel Okra SUV, was clocked at the breakneck speed of 202km/h stating that he was rushing home. It was later established that, he took the Opel (belonging to his parents) for a joy ride without permission. All the arrestees were charged at Germiston police station with reckless and negligent driving. The drivers will appear in Germiston Magistrate's Court soon.
