By Asiphe Mangumta

Khaya Sibeko (43 years) is a runnr from Basonia,Alberton. Born and bred in Cape town,he since came to Johannesburg to study geology at the university of Johannesburg . Khaya said,”i felt in love with running though it started as a means of losing weight, at first I was running 5km to 10km then moved to professionally”.

Previously he worked as a miner, but left the job in 2016 to start his own business in investment ,and he recruited other people to invest and make money. Starting his own business gave him time to focus on his health, fitness and growing his business. “Working without exercising can causes stress, and that can cause permanent sickness”,said khaya.

In 2013 he weighed 92kg and it took him time to get 72kg, at times he lost weight, but again gained. Khaya emphasized the needed to be persistent and not giving up, his target weight is between 69-62kg and that’s when he will then consider himself healthy. For Khaya being over 40 years, one is vulnerable to sicknesses like diabetics, cancer ,etc. Living a healthy lifestyle makes one to live longer and also to cope with the body changes.

When one exercises the chances of being sick are slim,or if that person does get sick the sickness can be easily/manageable. prevention is better than cure and it’s difficult to start a life of leaving a healthy lifestyle when faced with sickness, said Khaya. While trying to lose weight, he met friends and other runners who introduced him to comrades marathon.

He has took part of the comrades marathon in Durban in june every year and also took Part on the Two Ocean marathon taking place in Cape Town once a year. He is training for three days in Germiston rugby grounds. For him training does not have to cost a lot, using public facilities are accessibly and not cost anything. One does not need expensive gym clothing or being a member of any group and one can use them for person gain and lead a healthy lifestyle.

He advice people to eat healthy and also eat three hours before going to bed for food to digest properly so that the following morning one can easily use the bathroom and exercise properly. Word of caution one must avoid coldrinks, fat, bread, alcohol and sugar, people need to be cautious of what these things can do to one’s health and body. According to Khaya people should be aware of the damage they do to their body by not doing anything, eating unhealthy food and that awareness will motivate them to wake up in the morning and walk, start by walking for 30 minutes every day.

To him fitness and healthy lifestyle does not have to cost a fortune. “wake up and start by walking that will motivate you to start running and drinking a lot of water and sometimes add lemons" said Khaya. As profession runner, Khaya works with a schedule, he does 18km on Mondays then less throughout the week. He is looking forward to taking part in the Soweto Marathon on the 1st of November 2019.
