On Tuesday (27 Aug), around 15h00 on the Albertina Sisulu freeway (R21 corridor) direction north between Olifantsfontein and Irene, a white Scania truck towing two (2) trailers containing beverages worth more than R3milion, was stopped and hijacked by four (4) male suspects on the side of the roadway, two (2) in police uniform. The vehicle tracker was immediately activated by the truck driver and the Capital Air tracking company in cooperation with EMPD Specialized Task Team unit and Winnie Mandela precinct Officers responded.
After the truck driver was overpowered by assailants who were about to drive off in a white 22meter long Scania truck, the Heavy Motor Vehicle was cornered and Metro Police Officers were shown a clean pair of heels by four (4) male suspects. Two (2) managed to evade the arrest and the other pair could not outrun the athletic officers. They were tackled to the ground and apprehended, at the corner of M57 and Nellmapius. The truck recovered with all its cargo untouched, was impounded to SAPS Van Ryn’s Deep for safe keeping and the victim (truck driver) was unscathed but, was treated for shock by paramedics on site
The manhunt has been launched for suspects at large and two caught, who are both 28yrs, were taken to the Olifantsfontein police station and charged with motor vehicle hijacking. They are expected to appear at the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court soon.
