A white Mercedes Benz panel van carrying cargo valued at over R400,000 was on Friday, 23 August hijacked on N12 freeway near Zuurbekom in the West Rand area. Allegedly, four vehicles – two Audis, a Toyota Hilux and a Toyota Quantum all white in colour – accosted the Merc panel van driver armed with rifles and handguns. The hijacking occurred around 07h30 in the morning.
The hijacked Merc Sprinter panel van with cargo of cigarettes was recovered around 10h40 on Ninth Road at Bredell a suburb in Kempton Park. The tracking device was apparently removed and jammed as it was found near the abandoned empty Merc panel van. The recovery was made by the EMPD Specialized Task Team and SAPS Provincial Saturation Unit. Although the driver’s personal belongings and cash were taken he was not harmed.
The recovered Merc panel van was taken to SAPS Van Ryn Deep pound in Benoni after forensics were conducted on the scene. In-depth investigations are underway in an effort to locate and apprehend the perpetrators of the crime.
