Restoring smiles across SA

There is nothing more beautiful than the smile on a child’s face. Some children born with facial deformities have not yet found their smile and one organisation, the Smile Foundation, is on a mission to change this. Boxer Superstores, known by many as the ‘Community Champion’ has worked with the Foundation on that mission in the quest to bring hope and happiness to children across the country.

The Smile Foundation provides life changing reconstructive surgery to those children who qualify; those affected by facial anomalies such as Cleft Lip and Palate, burns, Moebius Syndrome and other conditions These children can receive special surgical treatment from world class doctors and specialists. Boxer recognised that reaching out to find children in need from across the country can prove challenging hence, Boxer made it a focus to assist.

Boxer Superstore, because of their numerous store locations across the country, provides communities with a central venue to sign up a loved one that can be referred to the Smile Foundation. “We urge families to go to Boxer and sign up with the Foundation if they have a loved one who can be treated. As a community champion, Boxer is proud to play a part in the Foundation’s work to uplift communities,” said Boxer Marketing Director Andrew Mills. In 2018 the foundation assisted more than 291 children. “If you know children in your community who need assistance, we urge you to go to your nearest Boxer store and register someone who needs our help. We strive to uplift and transform children’s lives. Together with the National Department of Health and the Medical Departments of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 11 Academic Hospitals we offer holistic support for any child, caregiver and family,” said Smile Foundation CEO Hedley Lewis.

The Smile Foundation also provides assistance to patients in need of transport for hospital visits, shares educational information and arranges psychological counselling before, during and after surgery if needed. “By educating parents while their children are in hospital, they are able to share information with their communities, and through word of mouth open up opportunities for many more children to receive the help they need,” added Lewis.
