Sibikwa Arts Centre’s Director’s Showcase

Sibikwa’s Director’s Showcase will take place on Sunday 10 November 2019 at 2pm, providing 4 emerging directors a platform to present their work in aprofessional theatre space. For Aphiwe Namba, Moeketsi Kgotle, Linda Tshabalala and Nhlanhla Mazibuko, the Director’s Showcase offers an opportunity to showcase their work, access a broader market, and receive feedback on their work. This year, the Director’s Showcase will offer audiences an afternoon of original, innovative and pertinent performances,exploring issues such as mental health, memory and identity, and

relationships, through comedy, drama and musical theatre.

Aphiwe Namba studied Drama and Production at Durban University of Technology. During his studies, he received multiple awards for acting, and was a 2-time winner of the Creative Achievement Award for musical direction. He has produced several plays including Mid‐day Express and Nandi’s Letters. Amongst Men, is a one-hander, written and directed by Aphiwe and

performed by Menzi Mkhwane. Through the use of comedy, the play tells the story of Fasimba, a mentally disturbed traditional healer who has been chosen to lead his people to the promised land free from hardship.

Moeketsi Kgotle is a performer, facilitator, writer and theatre director. He has completed various performing arts training programmes with Sibikwa Arts Centre, IQ Academy and Assitej SA. He is currently a Masters student at Drama for Life, Wits University, where he received the Dr John Kani Theatre for Social Change Award. Moeketsi will be presenting Ha Bra Saki, a play about a community that meets at Saki’s place, where they share and expose individual and collective perceptions, myths and fears.

Linda Tshabalala is a performer, director, and script writer, currently studying music theory and percussion at the Music Academy of Gauteng. Over his career, Linda has received theatre training from Dorothy Ann Gould, Sibikwa Arts Centre and the Market Theatre Lab, where he was assistant

director on the successful production Hani: The Legacy. Linda will be performing his one-hander Books and Boxes - a story about a young writer wanting to record his life experiences and searching for a part of himselfto complete his life story.

Nhlanhla Mazibuko is a graduate of the Market Theatre Lab and Sibikwa Arts Centre. He is a writer, director and lighting technician, who has played lead roles in film, TV and theatre productions, and worked across the country, using the arts for community upliftment. Nhlanhla will be presenting Joining the Dots, performed by 8 actresses, with music by Sanele Mzimela. A tale of women in the present South Africa, the story follows themusical journey of Dikeledi, a victim of child abuse who holds on to the fond memories of her grandmother to keep her moving through the ups and

downs of life.As part of this year’s Director’s Showcase, we are privileged to have Mahlatsi Mokgonyana, a formidable young director in the South African theatre scene, provide feedback to the directors for the further development of their work.

The Director’s Showcase will take place on Sunday 10 November 2019, from 14h00 to 17h00, at Sibikwa Arts Centre, 13 Liverpool Road, Benoni.
