THE EMPD CHIEF OF POLICE ARREST AN INTOXICATED DRIVER IN BENONI AREA

On Friday (20 Dec) at 11:45 in Benoni area on Heidelberg/R23 road by Tom Jones, the EMPD Chief of Police Jabulani I. Mapiyeye, stopped a motorist for driving inconsiderately. After the Head of Department noticed that the male Toyota Yaris driver had one (1) too many (intoxicated), the General's hands got dirty and he did the necessary.

The 25-year old hatch back driver with a strong liquor odor, was breathalyzed and the alcometer device, revealed that the motorist was over the limit (0.53), before he was handcuffed and marched to Benoni police station. Charges of reckless and negligent driving coupled with driving while under the influence of alcohol, were registered against the tipsy motorist. The arrested suspect, will appear at the Benoni Magistrate's Court soon.

Meanwhile in Tembisa area between 12h00 and 18h00, on the Albertina Sisulu (R21) freeway direction north, at the Engen 1 stop (Highveld) filling station, the EMPD Social Crime prevention Unit Members, City of Ekurhuleni Health department personnel, Communications and Brand Management brigade in conjunction with Kaya FM team, staged a festive season road safety campaign where pamphlets about career path and development in metro police, street children, human trafficking, domestic violence and women abuse, safety through awareness, child abuse and neglect, road safety, holiday season with drug and substance abuse, were distributed to pedestrians and motorists. Cute teddy bear dolls and yo-yo's, were presented to toddlers found appropriately restrained on the car/vehicle seats and condoms were issued to motorists (including truck drivers). Later on, the Chief of Police joined us and engaged few motorists, on road safety issues. Volunteers checked their blood pressure, glucose, prostate cancer (for males) and cholesterol for free, on site. The City of Ekurhuleni Emergency Services Spokesperson William Ntladi, conducted a radio interview with Kaya FM, about the 'buckle Up' campaign with water drowning and fire tips.

Consequently, let us regard road safety as everybody's responsibility. Let us all make a concerted effort to assist authorities in the fighting of this war against road carnage, by observing the traffic laws and acting responsibly on our roads. Let us all as drivers, cyclists and pedestrians alike be respectful of the rules of the road and be considerate to one another in order to avert tragic situations.

"I would like to wish the City of Ekurhuleni community a peaceful and safe festive season and implore drivers to be considerate at all times and to act in a responsible manner on our roads", says Chief of Police, Jabulani I. Mapiyeye. "Let us obey the rules of the road to the letter so as to arrive comfortably and safely at our destinations. Let us ensure that safety/seat belts are used and that children are also properly restrained during the road trips. Motorists are urged to plan thoroughly for the journeys they will be undertaking to identify safe waypoints in order to avert the dangerous element of fatigue", Mapiyeye concluded.
