On monday (09 September 2019)in Springs area at 08:45, the EMPD Public Order Policing (POPS) Unit members patrolling the N17 freeway, stopped a suspicious looking white Toyota Fortuner Special Utility Vehicle (SUV) travelling east bound by Daggafontein, with an intention of searching six (6) male occupants spotted on the inside.
The uneasy male driver in his mid-40s, who claimed to be a Teacher and the liable owner, alighted the wagon and Officers requested to see his driver's license. As he was explaining to Officers that he left his documents at home, three (3) male occupants exit the Fortuner and a 9mm CZ firearm with serial numbers tempered with and x15 live rounds fell from one of the suspects, before they started shooting at Metro Police, as they ran on foot towards a nearby informal settlement. The POPS Unit retaliated where three male suspects between the ages of 35 and 40 were incapacitated. Police uncovered a sports bag full of undisclosed amount of money inside the Toyota Fortuner.
It is not clear at this stage why they were travelling with large amount of cash but, we suspect it was illegally obtained. The three (3) wounded suspects, who are under Police guard in one of the appropriate hospitals, are receiving medical treatment and they are facing charges of attempted murder with possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The suspects will appear at the Springs Magistrate's Court, as soon as they have fully recovered from their injuries
(hip, foot and abdomen). There were no visible injuries from EMPD Officers following the exchange of gun fire. The Toyota Fortuner was impounded to Benoni Van Ryn's Deep for thorough investigations and the threesome, are still at large and the hunt is on.
