A Plate of Hope is moved with Compassion

By Thabang Rammutla

The homeless and disadvantaged community will always have a special place in Mpho Khunoane’s heart who decided to address their issues by alleviating hunger among them through her NPO ‘Moved by Compassion’.

The NPO was established on the 9th of July 2019 and formerly registered recently on the 8th of April 2020. Despite being unemployed and having no sponsor for the NPO, Khunoane, managed to get 7 people on board to contribute the little they have to help the homeless people. “We all contribute the little that we have as we are all unemployed and we also receive some help from friends,” Khunoane said. However, since the beginning of lockdown, hunger has become another pandemic leaving millions of families going to bed with empty stomach and the homeless tormented. That is what provoked Khunoane to establish ‘Moved by Compassion’ and she said their main inspiration is Jesus Christ and demonstrated by quoting Matt 14:13-21 as follows: “Jesus was moved with compassion when he saw the multitude hungry as he was speaking the word of God.”

The NPO cook food that make up to 100 plates Mondays and Fridays and even though it’s not every day, their contribution still make a big difference to the homeless and disadvantaged community. “We make 100 plates each day we cook and as we drive from Vosloorus to Boksburg CBD we spot random needy and homeless people and we give them a plate too,” Said Khunoane. Nonetheless, Khunoane has ambitions and faith that the NPO will reach the global disadvantaged communities as she maintains that “every part of the world has a homeless person”. So feeding and helping the homeless people will be their main objective. “Our vision is to be able to send out food and clothing to different countries and help the homeless,” Khunoane envisioned.
