Wednesday, 29 July 2020 Dr Billyy van der Merwe, managing director of Netcare’s Primary Care Division, of which Medicross is a subsidiary, today expressed his deep sadness at the passing of Dr Berend Jacobus Zweep who practised at Medicross Roodepoort for the past 17 years.
“We at Medicross deeply mourn the loss of a healthcare professional of great stature. Dr Jimmy, as he was affectionately known, had a distinguished career in medicine and was much loved by his colleagues and patients, as well as by the staff and management of Medicross Roodepoort. He and his partner, Dr Bertie Venter, joined Medicross Roodepoort from their previous practice in Roodepoort in 2003,” said Dr Van der Merwe.
“Dr Jimmy was a highly respected general practitioner who served the community of Roodepoort and surrounding areas for several decades. Over the course of his 40-year career, he developed a special bond with the community of the nearby Gateway Centre for mentally challenged persons, where he worked as a resident general practitioner. He had a great love for the Gateway community, where his wife Aleida still works, tirelessly taking care of the residents.”
“He demonstrated true commitment to his vocation through his admirable work ethic and genuine care and concern for his patients and their families. Dr Jimmy has been described by many as a true gentleman with a ready smile who always had time to share a moment of fun and laughter with everyone.
“Dr Jimmy truly lived the Medicross core value of care. He was highly regarded by his patients for his dedication and compassion, and he was highly respected by colleagues. He was well known for putting everyone else first,” added Dr Van der Merwe.
“We wish to express our sincere condolences to his wife Aleida, sons Berend and Arno and daughter Jeanine. Dr Jimmy will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. We will greatly miss his laughter and positive demeanour and would like to take the opportunity to thank his family for allowing us to share a part of his life over the past 17 years,” concluded Dr Van der Merwe.
