The Gauteng Department of Community Safety urges motorists, particularly public transport operators, to make road safety a priority this coming long weekend. Long weekends are usually characterized by long distance travelling for various purposes in and outside of the province.
In the past, the province experienced road crashes which ultimately resulted in many people losing during such weekends. Many of these accidents occurred due to non-compliance with the rules of the road.
As we approach the long weekend, the department would like to encourage motorists to obey the rules of the road and keep the Gauteng City Region safe. Our law enforcement authorities will be on high alert to deal decisively with road traffic violations such as driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving, excessive speeding, freight overloading and roadworthiness this long weekend.
The department also urges the law enforcement officers to conduct themselves with due diligence as they execute their work during this busy weekend. Fraud and corruption undermines the rule of law and negatively impacts on the good work that is being done by law enforcement agencies in the province. Our enforcement agencies will intensify roadside checkpoint, speed as well as drinking and driving operations targeting some of the most hazardous locations in the province. Other operations will be on crime prevention in an effort to ensure a safe long weekend for our communities.
