Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina has closed the Ekurhuleni food bank which has benefitted over 30 thousands families since it was launched in April. The success of the city of Ekurhuleni food bank is anchored on the donations that were received from generous companies and individual.
The mayor acknowledged the volunteers “who have worked really hard to ensure that we reach daily target of almost 1000 food parcels per day.”
“I want to thank all these donors who are too many to mention to step up when it was prior to them to do so, it is often said that capital has no heart but this initiative has demonstrated that the private sectors has the capacity to contribute meaningfully to our society.” The mayor said.
Many of the donors who were present during the mayor’s virtual closing of the food bank, expressed their interest to continue with the initiative. The mayor however, pledged that the city might look at a different format to continue with the food bank initiative.
“I would like to ensure you that it was not out of disrespect we suggested to close the food bank as we thought COVID-19 was just gonna come and go but it is quite evident that more than ever before our people will need this service.” The mayor said.
In closing the mayor thanked MMC for Human Settlements Lesiba Mpya, and health & social development Nomadlozi Nkosi, who over the past three months have dedicated their time and work side by side with volunteers to make this initiative a success.
Furthermore, it was made clear by the mayor that the donors funded the food bank independently and the city has no hand in putting the funds together.
“Lastly, I would like to thank our donors for the contribution they have made, and in case you did not know we did not spend even a cent of the municipality when we open the food bank from day one up to the last day.” The mayor ensured.
