Exactly at 00H09 Sunday morning, Benoni central fire station received a call via the call centre of a well light dwelling structure at 6 Drury lane in Benoni, City of Ekurhuleni.
Crews swiftly responded to the scene to render firefighting services augmented by Brakpan, Boksburg and Etwatwa firefighters respectively. First arriving Major pumper on scene, found flames and dense smoke already protruding through the roof section of ten roomed house. Offensive fire attack was immediately initiated using as attack line from the tank prior arrival of other resources. For water sustainability, secondary pump crews relayed water from the nearby fire hydrant to the main pump.
On arrival of the other two water tankers from Boksburg and Etwatwa fire stations, three more attack lanes were established, and fire was contained and extinguished without any further damage to the structure. Crews managed to salvage 9 and 19 kg LPG cylinders from inside the house, micro-oven and a power generator amongst other items. No casualties were recorded on scene as all five occupants including those from the backyard rooms, managed to escape including the pets. Eight rooms inclusive of bath and toilet, were destroyed by blaze, four others saved. Intense damage was in the dinning and lounge rooms spreading to the entire structure. The cause of the fire is undetermined and still a subject of investigations.
