Johannesburg – Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Agriculture and Environment, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, will tomorrow, the 4th of September 2019, form part of a domestic tourism promotion drive in Sedibeng to mark the launch of both tourism and heritage month.
The programme which is dubbed #GPshotleft in Sedibeng will commence with a visit to the Sharpeville Memorial in Sharpeville Township, a memorial in honour of the lives lost during the Sharpeville shooting and to all those who died for the liberation of South Africa. It is located in Seeiso Street in Sharpeville, opposite the police station where the shootings took place.
At the memorial, the MEC will interact with the various role-players including the staff at the centre and local communities to encourage them to be tourists in their own backyards. The programme will proceed to Boipatong Memorial, another site housing the painful story of the dreadful night of the 17th of June 1992.
Later in the day, the MEC will proceed to Emerald Resort & Casino, a magnificent entertainment hub on the lush banks of the Vaal River combining a tranquil escape with exciting gaming and resort experience. In here, the MEC will interact with the private sector who are the major beneficiaries of the government marketing efforts to promote tourism and grow the visitor economy.
The day-long programme will culminate into a tourism stakeholder engagement session and luncheon on the famous Aqua Lounge Boat at the majestic Riviera Hotel on the Vaal. In here, tourism stakeholders in Sedibeng, Gauteng Tourism CEO and MEC Ramokgopa will engage on the value and importance of tourism in creating the much-needed jobs and anchoring economic growth efforts. Sedibeng Region with its sprawling townships, rich heritage and political history forms part of an interwoven story of Gauteng Township Tourism Experiences.
