Three people sustained serious injuries while trying to extinguish seven shacks gutted by flames in Madelakufa-two informal settlement Tembisa this afternoon and had to be urgently hospitalised as a result. Firefighters from Tembisa fire station were called around 15:06 this afternoon and equalled the task at hands. They were augmented by crews from Commercia and Olifantsfontein fire stations respectively. On arrival, shacks were gutted by flames spreading fast to the other dwellings wafted by strong whirlwinds. Direct fire suppression was initiated, flames contained and extinguished without further damage to other structures. A fleet of three Major pumpers and two disaster relief vehicles were used to facilitate the remedial actions. Disaster management assisted twenty-one people whom their structures are destroyed by the blaze with disaster relief aids.
Three people sustained deep lacerations because of sharp objects on scene while trying to demolish and salvage their properties from the horror of fire. The injured were all transported to Tembisa hospital for further medical care. The cause of the fire is still a subject of investigations however, it is alleged that the cause was a brazier left attended while used for cooking. Disaster relief aids were issued to the affected families. Still in Tembisa, a shop was looted and set alight yesterday morning near Oakmore train station. Emergency services received the call around nine o`clock in the morning and immediately responded to the scene for intervention. Crews from Tembisa fire station were assisted by fire fighters from Olifantsfontein fire station. Flames caused intense structural damage. Part of the roof had already collapsed, and walls cracked pausing high risk to the entire crews and members of the public. In the early of Tuesday, three shops were set alight in Vosloorus Gold Spot after they were looted by members of the public. Vosloorus fire fighting crews backed-up by firefighters from Wadeville fire station, managed to save what was to be a disaster. Several shops were exposed and at high risk of a potential burn as they share the same building. The swift intervention and the presence of law enforcement units remedied the situation. City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) is on high alert to render all necessary interventions in accordance to the expertise.
