An adult male believed to be in his early fifties was killed on Monday(6th January) after a newly under construction building collapsed while inside. Three other fellow contractors sustained serious but stable injuries and were all hospitalized.
Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) in the City of Ekurhuleni, swiftly responded to the scene at the corner of Liverpool and Bolton roads Benoni south after the reception of the call at 15:18 Monday afternoon. Rescue team and paramedics from Benoni central fire station responded to the scene and on arrival, the casualties were found laid on the safe ground away from the rubble by bystanders.
As per information on scene, the building was a new multiple storey structure. It was on its third-floor level already. It is alleged that the four employees were removing the supporting structures from under the concrete slaps prior the collapse.
The injured were transported to Tambo Memorial hospital after paramedical interventions for further definitive medical treatment while the deceased was removed from the scene by the Forensic Pathologists.
The scene was handed over to the South African Police Services (SAPS) officers for further investigations.
