THE SUSPECTED DRUNK DRIVER BEHIND BARS FOLLOWING A FATAL CRASH IN ALBERTON AREA

The R59 (Sybrand Van Niekerk) freeway direction north (towards Johannesburg) in Alberton area, came to a standstill between Swartkoppies on ramp and Michelle off ramp, following a fatal crash involving two (2) motor vehicles. Sunday (16 Feb) at 00:30, a slightly injured 31-year old male VW Polo driver, who was alone in the hatch back at the time of the accident, was marched to Alberton police station and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol including culpable homicide, after his readings on a breathalyzer/alcometer registered 0.37. The 37-year old male off duty Ekurhuleni Metro Police Officer in a white Mercedes Benz sedan, unfortunately succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead on site, by medical experts. A 32-year old female passenger who was with him during the crash, sustained slight injuries and was rushed to Southrand hospital for medical attention and for shock treatment.

It is not clear at this stage what actually occurred before the crash but, preliminary investigations reveals that both vehicles involved, were travelling towards the same direction, before the white VW Polo, somehow ram the Mercedes from the rear where it (Mercedes) lost control and rolled to an embankment. The EMPD Accident Reconstruction Unit Members were on site and the suspect, will appear in the Palmridge Magistrate's Court soon
